Trump dodges London protests for tea with Queen Elizabeth

Amid mass protests against the president's visit, Donald Trump's itinerary features a relatively short stay in London, with a lavish black-tie dinner to be held for him at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire on Thursday night.

The president described Britain as a "hot spot" with "a lot of resignations", and added that his trip next week to Helsinki to meet President Putin may be comparatively easier.

As Trump is expected to discuss a possible post-Brexit trade deal and other worldwide issues with May, organizers of Friday's demonstrations say there is no shortage of issues that will inspire mass numbers of people to attend.

Despite not being an official state visit, the Government is desperate to ensure the USA leader feels he is being treated with the appropriate level of pomp and ceremony.

President Donald Trump landed in London after leaving a 2-day summit in Brussels where he claimed victory on defense spending.

"The people voted to break it up, so I would imagine that's what they would do, but maybe they're taking a different route".

Protesters have been inflating a blimp made to look like a baby version of Trump, and are preparing to fly it over Parliament during his visit.

"She sits there looking plain in her poker face and no one knows what she's thinking behind the mask", Brown said.

However, Mr Trump declared the British people like him a lot, as he began his first official visit to the country. "And I believe it", the president said a year ago of the welcome he was shown by China's President Xi.

Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has granted permission for a giant inflatable figure depicting Mr Trump as a baby to fly over Westminster for two hours on the second day of the president's visit.

May said in remarks during a banquet on Thursday with Mr. Trump at Blenheim Palace, Churchill's birthplace.

Trump is technically on a lower-level working visit this week.

Such comments are likely to be seen as unwelcome by Mrs May, who has already faced significant political criticism for hosting Mr Trump. "I think that's why they voted for Brexit".

Johnson resigned as UK Foreign Secretary over May's handling of Brexit, a move that saw Britain vote to leave the European Union in June, 2016, following a referendum.

May contacted Trump days after he was inaugurated, extending the invitation for a coveted state visit that would be hosted by Queen Elizabeth II, but that gesture has proved far more controversial than expected as Trump has shown little interest in maintaining "diplomacy as usual" with European allies. "Now, for the benefit of all our people, let us work together to build a more prosperous future", she said in excerpts released in advance. "Who would think? But the United Kingdom certainly - they certainly have a lot of things going on".

On Friday, he will hold talks with May expected to focus on Brexit and Russian Federation, at the prime minister's Chequers country residence followed by a press conference.

Mr Trump, who is due to arrive in Scotland on Air Force One on Friday, is expected to spend the weekend at his luxury golf resort on the South Ayrshire coast.

Donald Trump will then visit the Queen with first lady Melania Trump at Windsor Castle before heading off to Theresa May's countryside home Chequers.
