America has just one Blockbuster store left

America has just one Blockbuster store left

"We will reopen for our inventory sale on Tuesday, July 17th at 12 noon and will run through the months of July and August". But with the last two holdouts in Alaska set to close next week, the move will leave one solitary Blockbuster in the whole of America.

This week, there are three stores remaining, but by next week there will only be one store open for business - in Bend, Oregon.

The stores, one on DeBarr Road in Anchorage and the other in Fairbanks, will close Monday for rental business, a post on the Facebook page for Blockbuster in Alaska said Thursday afternoon.

After Blockbuster declared bankruptcy in 2011 and closed most of its corporate stores, Alaska had seemed to be the final frontier for the one-time video-rental giant.

The announcement is one of a recent series of Blockbuster closures across the country with store numbers dropping from 13 in 2013 to six in 2016. In what might come as a huge relief, she said, "We have no plans on closing anytime soon".

A long, long time ago, people had to travel to brick and motor stores to pay money to rent movies.

Daymude said the loss of such a loyal customer base will be a hard element in addition to the closing.

"Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years", Daymude said in a heartfelt message on Facebook.

In May, John Oliver and HBO even donated a freaky assortment of Russell Crowe paraphernalia to one of the Anchorage stores that announced plans to close on Thursday.

The final two Blockbusters in Alaska are said to still be very profitable.

Blockbuster Alaska General Manager Kevin Daymude moves a display case featuring the jockstrap worn by actor Russell Crowe in the 2005 movie "Cinderella Man" at a Blockbuster video store in Anchorage, Alaska. What a great time to build your media library and share some Blockbuster memories with us.

The days of aimlessly walking the aisles of your local Blockbuster every Friday night have been over for years in most parts of the United States.
