Anderson into Wimbledon final after second longest ever Grand Slam singles match

Anderson into Wimbledon final after second longest ever Grand Slam singles match

It's just so many mixed emotions.

The match was the second longest in Wimbledon history - after Isner's 11-hour 2010 defeat of Nicolas Mahut - and Anderson was not in a celebratory mood after dragging himself off court.

TBD. Yes, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic did not finish their semifinal, with the Serb up two sets to one.

Nadal and Djokovic will meet for the 52nd time. For us to be out there for this length of time, not just on us but coming back and trying to compete at this stage.

The victor of Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic awaits Anderson in Sunday's final.

It was the second longest Wimbledon match ever - and longest Wimbledon semi-final - as it lasted 6 hours and 35 minutes.

Isner had won the last five meetings with Anderson but their history together goes even further than their first professional encounter back in 2008.

Anderson had break points in the 15th, 21st and 35th games of the decider before taking victory when a tired Isner hit long.

"That definitely brings a smile to my face", Anderson said of his lefty shot in the critical game.

Kevin Anderson and John Isner began their semi-final contest on Centre Court on Friday.

After the break, Anderson closed out the match on his serve 26-24, after more than six and a half hours.

Others called for a rule change, suggesting a deciding fifth-set tie-break be introduced rather than waiting for a clear victor.

Wimbledon's lack of a fifth set tiebreaker in one of the things that makes the major unique. Both are tall - Isner's 6-foot-10, Anderson 6-foot-8 - and lanky. In the pros, Isner had won eight of 11 previous matchups.

But this one was as competitive and close as can be.

There wasn't a whole lot of intrigue, or momentum shifts.

And the serving? Well, that was something else. Both wore a white baseball hat, Anderson with the brim in front, Isner with his turned his backward. Another set point came at 9-8, but this time on Isner's serve, who saved it with a 138 miles-per-hour serve. He lost the first two sets, and when Federer forced a match point up 5-4 in the third, the outlook seemed bleak.

"You know somebody has to win".

Anderson would create that turning moment when he resorted to using his non-dominant hand to win a point after tumbling to the grass. "I felt like I did some good business here in the past already", he said. I really feel for him.

He never got a break point in the fifth set.
