Britons back Trump on airing Brexit views

At a news conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May in Britain on Friday, Trump claimed that a newspaper interview that quoted him criticizing May's Brexit and trade strategies was "fake news."

The outspoken US president, on an official visit to the UK, warned Theresa May that her Brexit plan could "kill" any UK-US trade deal because Britain would remain so closely aligned to the European Union.

The headline in question: "TRUMP'S BREXIT BLAST Donald Trump told Theresa May how to do Brexit "but she wrecked it" - and says the United States trade deal is off".

He said he had gotten to know her a lot better in the last few days and reckoned she was a "tough negotiator and a very smart and determined person" who would do very well.

"I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London", the president said.

Trump, despite his interview with The Sun, said that he supported whatever decision May comes to regarding Brexit, Britain's departure from the European Union.

On Boris Johnson, Trump said again he thought the former foreign secretary would make a great prime minister. More than 60,000 people have signed up to demonstrate in London on Friday when protesters intend to fly a large balloon over parliament portraying Trump as an orange, snarling baby.

Donald Trump and and his wife Melania walk on the tarmac (left) at Stansted Airport, north of London, on Thursday, as Trump begins his first visit to the United Kingdom as U.S. president.

"It will certainly be something that we bring up and talk about", the U.S. president said.

One of the organisers behind "Baby Trump", Kevin Smith, said it was devised by a group of friends who got together in a pub.

Donald Trump has arrived for talks with Theresa May just hours after lobbing a political grenade that has left the Prime Minister badly wounded. I would actually say that she probably went the opposite way. "I didn't criticize the prime minister", Trump falsely claimed.

"Take a look at the terrorism that is taking place", Trump said. "I think they agree with me on immigration", he told reporters in Brussels.

Trump then heads to Windsor Castle later Friday for tea with Queen Elizabeth II.

When asked what he hopes to accomplish in his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, Trump said they would be talking about Ukraine, Syria and other parts of the Middle East as well as nuclear proliferation. "I think it changed the fabric of Europe, and unless you act very quickly, it's never going to be what it was, and I don't mean that in a positive way". I said tremendous things.

"But Boris Johnson would, I think, be a great prime minister".

While his trip was not a full state visit, he has been given red carpet treatment and is scheduled to have tea later with Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle, where her grandson Prince Harry married U.S. actress Meghan Markle in May.

"I'd like to see them be able to work it out so it could go quickly", he said.
