Kevin Anderson Outlasts John Isner in a Five-Set Marathon at Wimbledon

Kevin Anderson Outlasts John Isner in a Five-Set Marathon at Wimbledon

It started at 1 p.m. local time.

Anderson survived Friday's incredible endurance test, beating Isner 7-6 (8/6), 6-7 (5/7), 6-7 (9/11), 6-4, 26-24 in six hours and 36 minutes.

He had also gone five sets to beat eight-time champion Roger Federer in the quarter-finals, winning the decider 13-11.

"Just playing like that in those conditions, it was really tough for both of us".

Anderson served for the match and it ended with Isner planting a forehand wide, the American's dream over. Nadal leads overall (26-25) and at Grand Slam tournaments (9-4), while they're even at Wimbledon (1-1), where Djokovic won their 2011 final.

That "endless match" prompted officials to erect a plaque on Court 18 to commemorate the feats of the two players. That means, should the remainder of Nadal and Djokovic's match last longer than an hour - which, judging by what they dished up today, is a very real possibility - then the women's final will be delayed. The other three majors all play out the fifth set until the victor is ahead by two games.

The fifth and deciding set, which was a titanic battle, saw various records tumble, including, longest Wimbledon semi-final and the longest match in the history of Centre Court.

Friday's fifth set wasn't quite as long, but still, it lasted almost 3 hours as the semifinal became a test of endurance more than skill.

"At the same time, I'm through to the finals - wow, what can I say about that!" "I've hit a lot of left-handed balls throughout my life". I apologize if I'm not fully excited right now.

The match surpassed the previous record set by another five-setter between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro in a 2013 semifinal. That one lasted 11 hours, 5 minutes and took place over the course of three days.

The match could not end due to a quirk of Wimbledon and two of the other Grand Slams - the fifth set cannot end in a tiebreaker. "I think I can keep doing damage here".

John Isner slipped earlier in the match with Kevin Anderson. "With Anderson standing 6'8" and Isner two inches taller still, both men are capable of hammering down aces at will and have done so throughout the Championships.

Anderson's fifth set alone lasted almost 3 hours as his semifinal became a test of endurance more than skill.

After saving two set points in the third set tiebreak, Anderson blew his first set point at 8-7 with a double fault. Between that and the energy-sapper against Isner, it's hard to imagine how Anderson will have much left for Sunday's final, his second at a major.

Those named Kevin Anderson are being offered a free "victory feast" for them and two friends - in honour of his three-set victory.

They both served well in the remaining games and the 13th game was inevitable and Isner opened a 4-2 lead, only to lose the next point on serve that took the advantage away from him.

Anderson would create that turning moment when he resorted to using his non-dominant hand to win a point after tumbling to the grass. Just as important, Isner, having saved a match point against Ruben Bemelmans in the second round, must feel as if he's playing with house money here. "We want to see Rafa!"

Anderson had break points in the 15th, 21st and 35th games of the decider before taking victory when a tired Isner hit long.

The lefty shot would prove critical as Anderson would win that game to break Isner and then serve out the match.

This time past year, few would have expected to see either man back in the last-four at the All England Club.

Anderson had a strong chance to secure the third set and potentially keep the match from going the distance - as Anderson's round of 16 and quarterfinal bouts did. "I've felt better before", said Isner who had also been hoping to be the first American man in a Slam final since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009.
