Ontario woman becomes accidental auto thief after key fob mix-up

Ontario woman becomes accidental auto thief after key fob mix-up

The woman, a local herself, wasn't a repentant vehicle thief, but merely confused and possibly in a rush on the day she rented a auto - a black Nissan Sentra - and drove straight to Walmart to do a little shopping.

He said the woman - who won't face any charges - was a "bit embarrassed" but shrugged it off, and the man whose vehicle was stolen "had a good chuckle".

After leaving the store, the woman got into a vehicle that resembled her new rental, however she got into a 2015 black Infiniti QX50.

Soon after, police received a report about a black Nissan Infiniti that had been stolen in the same parking lot. She climbed in the unlocked auto, pushed the start button and drove home. Since the rental vehicle used the same system she was none the wiser to the mixup and drove off on her merry way.

Since the Infiniti owner had reported his vehicle stolen, the police were able to track him down and return the auto.

She then took the auto to a local Walmart, around the same time the man took his black Infiniti to the same vehicle park. I got into the auto and I noticed different objects on the dashboard, then I noticed I got into the wrong vehicle.

Police in Canada are reminding drivers not to leave electronic key fobs sitting in unattended vehicles, after a woman in Ontario accidentally stole a auto for two weeks having mistaken it for her rental auto.

That car's owner had also been shopping in Walmart before realising his vehicle had vanished.

The woman got into the unlocked auto, pressed the keyless start button, and drove off - oblivious to the fact it was a completely different vehicle to her own rental.

According to the CBC, a the woman didn't realize the mistake until she tried to return the vehicle to rental service and the manager was able to put together what happened. "The woman was not impressed and handed over the keys".

The woman contacted police and explained how she had accidentally taken an Infinity and driven around in it for two weeks.

Though police say there was a "happy and amusing ending to this story", they say it serves as a ideal reminder not to leave key fobs in unattended vehicles. "You never know who might take it!"

While they described it as a "happy ending to a complicated vehicle rental", police cast the story as a broader warning over electronic key fobs. When both, the manager and the woman reached the Walmart parking lot, the rental auto was still parked at the same spot where it had been parked two weeks before.
