Thai boys recuperate in hospital

Thai boys recuperate in hospital

Mr Stanton and several other British divers had joined the rescue mission after the football team became trapped in an underground network in Chiang Rai province following monsoon rains.

"We should never underestimate what they individually, collectively went through", Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said.

"And all this time four courageous Navy Seals sat with the Wild Boars knowing they were in as much danger as the kids".

"Great work and we really appreciate it", a Thai military official said as he bestowed on the men the souvenir medals during a ceremony at Chiang Rai airport.

The hospital in northern Thailand where the 12 boys and their soccer coach are quarantined said Friday they are basically healthy, aside from some minor infections.

It's an inspiring story fit for Hollywood: 12 courageous young soccer players trapped in a flooded cave for two weeks, dauntless rescuers risking life and limb to save the team, a wave of support from dozens of countries as the world watched with bated breath for the rescuers to emerge victorious with the Wild Boars safe in hand.

The cave rescue was a unsafe operation.

British cave-diver John Volanthen walks out from Tham Luang Nang Non cave in full kit without any response to reporter's questions, June 28, 2018 in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

The aim was to learn how to "tightly package" each of the boys in order to easily maneuver them through tight passageways and adjust their air supply as needed.

"He's got a very good bedside manner, he's got a very bouncy Australian accent, and they seemed to find that quite relaxing and reassuring", British diver John Volanthen said.

"We were very pleased and we were very relieved that they were all alive, but I think at that point we realized the enormity of the situation, and that's perhaps why it took a while to get them all out", Volanthen told Reuters after landing in the United Kingdom.

"We're not heroes", he told the BBC after arriving back in London.

There's been talk of awarding Volanthen and Stanton with the George Cross, the highest civilian award in the United Kingdom for acts of heroism. "They are children being children, it was an accident", he said.

The news comes a day after Pure Flix CEO and managing partner Michael Scott announced that his studio was working on a dramatic adaptation of the events surrounding the trapped Thai soccer team and their 25-year-old coach.

Dr Harris is home to be with his family after his 88-year-old father tragically died just hours after the successful completion of the rescue.

The decision to swim members of a Thai youth soccer team to safety from a flooded cave was made only after all other options were exhausted, Australian cave diver and retrieval expert Richard "Harry" Harris says.
