Trump claims North Atlantic Treaty Organisation victory but details in dispute

Trump claims North Atlantic Treaty Organisation victory but details in dispute

"I'm very consistent. I'm a very stable genius", he said.

Following US President Donald Trump's call for member states to raise defence spending to four per cent of GDP, Radev said that he had asked Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg what would happen to the Transatlantic relationship "which is the backbone of NATO's military capability, if we are not reaching two per cent (of GDP) now, and no one is talking about four per cent".

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called an emergency session of all 29 allies to address Trump's demands, and the USA leader said his hectoring had paid off.

Questioned repeatedly about Trump's unpredictable demands, Macron injected a note of gravity, underlining that NATO's work is important, that it involves the lives of men and women - U.S. Corporal Joseph Maciel from California was killed in an insider attack in southern Afghanistan last weekend - and must not be taken lightly.

He said the US commitment to the 29-member North Atlantic Treaty Organization remains very strong and cited "the additional money they will be putting up" and "the level of spirit in that room" during the meetings. He also said the other leaders had thanked him for raising the issue of how to support NATO's operations.

Trump berated North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members in Brussels for failing to spend enough of their money on military matters, accusing Europe of freeloading off the USA and raising doubts about whether he would come to their defense if attacked.

Excerpts from Trump's bombshell interview were published Thursday just as the president was scheduled to dine with May at the palace.

Mr Trump did not go into details about what specific countries had promised but suggested they would be increasing their rates of spending "at a much faster clip".

Interested in Donald Trump? "That's all." In the end, leaders left with an awkward consensus, after hours in which Trump had been so aggressive in his approach with allies that reports made the rounds that he might pull the US out.

But when pressed on the figures, he referred only to the $40bn (€34.2bn) in increased spending which allies had promised the alliance since Mr Trump became president. The officials said Trump threatened to "do his own thing". "Although our views on several issues differ, the alliance maintains a firm dialogue with Russian Federation", he added, mentioning the Crimea situation and the differences in the countries' views on the control of chemical weapons use.

GREENE: Ayesha, let me start with you. The president replied, "I think I probably can, but that's unnecessary". "It's very detailed", Macron said.

Trump has spent weeks berating members of the alliance for failing to spend enough of their money on defence, accusing Europe of freeloading off the USA and raising doubts about whether he would come to members' defence if they were ever attacked.

Under fire for his warm embrace of Russia's Vladimir Putin, Trump turned a harsh spotlight on Germany's own ties to Russian Federation, declaring Wednesday that a natural gas pipeline venture with Moscow has left Angela Merkel's government "totally controlled" and "captive" to Russian Federation. Instead, they said, members reaffirmed the need to stay on track with military-budget increases that have already been underway and were branded insufficient by Trump a day earlier.

Then, in a head-snapping pivot at the end, he declared the alliance a "fine-tuned machine" that had acceded to his demands to speed up increases in military spending to relieve pressure on the US budget.
