Twitter Purges 300K Trump Followers, Ari Fleischer Loses 4K

Twitter said its service-wide average drop was expected to be four followers.

The most-followed account on Twitter belongs to popular singer Katy Perry, who lost 1.5 million followers; the number now stands at 108.1 million.

Twitter said that a lot of people would see a change of about 4 followers or fewer but those people with larger follower accounts would experience a more significant drop. Dorsey tweeted that he saw 200,000 of his own followers vanish.

"Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate", said Twitter in a blog.

The new policy could be substantial for some Twitter users because follower totals serve as a top selling point when celebrities and so-called social media influencers negotiate deals with advertisers. "In these situations, we reach out to the owners of the accounts and unless they validate the account and reset their passwords, we keep them locked with no ability to log in", Twitter announced on Wednesday.

McHenry saw a similar drop this week, going from around 362,800 followers to 223,300 Thursday evening.

It's not news that President Donald Trump has always loved to speak his mind on Twitter, but now, he's going to be doing it to a smaller number of followers than he had before.

Having a strong follower base on Twitter is a thing of pride for many, but it serves a greater objective to celebs and social media influencers, who can negotiate deals with advertisers by boasting their impressive follower count.

Twitter shares fell 5% on Monday on concern that removing millions of fake accounts would impede user growth.

U.S. president Donald Trump, singers Katy Perry and Justin Bieber, former foreign secretary Boris Johnson and British actor Stephen Fry were among a multitude of Twitter celebrities to be affected by the cull.

However, Vijaya Gadde, from Twitter's trust and safety team made it clear that most of these accounts still have real people behind them.
