US forces European Union into buying LNG

US forces European Union into buying LNG

The US State Department's spokeswoman earlier this year said that companies engaged in the construction and financing of Nord Stream 2 "could expose themselves to sanctions" and echoed Poland's warnings that the gas pipeline would undermine Europe's energy security and stability.

In slamming Germany for its deal to double imports of Russian gas through Nord Stream II, Trump charged Berlin was spending billions of euros for its energy needs from Russia that it could be spending on Nato's defence.

"As for Germany's dependence (on Russia) as a major gas buyer we can not agree with this premise", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call when asked about Trump's comments.

Vice-President of the European Commission for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic has informed the U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry about the proposal of the EC for correcting the EU gas directive in connection with the discussions on Nord Stream 2. "I think that's very inappropriate", he said as Upstream went to press.

Trump took aim at the project which is set to run from Russian Federation to Germany under the Baltic Sea, where preparatory work for its construction began off the German and Finnish coasts in May.

"When it comes to Nord Stream, Canada has significant concerns about that project", she said. On Wednesday, Trump criticized Germany for being what he called a captive of Russian energy.

"We discussed it with Ukraine", Freeland said.

The pipeline has caused splits within the European Union, with Poland and other eastern states fearing it could be used as a tool to boost Russian influence over the bloc.

Mr Trump renewed his call for other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to pay in more to the Western alliance after years in which U.S. taxpayers have, he said, borne an "unfair" share of military spending.

In time the United States could sell more natural gas to Europe, but the sales probably will be limited to countries like Spain, Portugal and Turkey that have never received a lot of their supply from Russian Federation. Many critics also point out that Washington is trying to "squeeze" the supply of its LNG to the Europe, which is more high-priced than the Russian one and goes through the pipeline.
