Flesh-eating bacteria in raw oysters kill Florida man, health officials say

According to the Florida Department of Health, the 71-year-old man died of vibrio on July 10 after eating the oyster.

A Florida man died from a flesh-eating bacteria after eating bad oysters, according to officials. The unnamed man, who had underlying medical conditions, died two days later. The name of the restaurant was not released.

Raw oysters can carry Vibrio vulnificus, a bacteria that can cause flesh-eating disease.

Vibrio vulnificus is sometimes referred to as a "flesh-eating bacteria" but health officials say that label is misleading because it can not attack healthy skin.

Florida Health recommends not going in the water if you have fresh cuts or scrapes.

Vibrio is a strain of bacteria found in oysters and other seafood.

"Diarrhea, fever, general symptoms like associated with a GI or gastrointestinal illness". People with a weakened immune system are most at risk for severe illness or death. The bacteria does not change the appearance, odor or taste of an oyster. "Most infections occur from May through October when water temperatures are warmer". There have been 16 confirmed cases in Florida so far this year, with three fatalities.

Last year, Manatee County had two cases of flesh eating bacteria and Sarasota County had none.

They also should not enter the water with an open wound, but should wrap or protect any wounds before entering brackish sea water.

Pasco County has had no cases in 2018, and one non-fatal case each in 2017 and 2017. You can get infected by eating raw shellfish, particularly oysters, or by exposing open wounds to seawater. One study conducted by the Florida state health office found the infection was the leading cause of death from foodborne illness between 1981 and 1992.
