White House struggles to contain political outcry over Trump-Putin summit

White House struggles to contain political outcry over Trump-Putin summit

At first glance, the man on TIME's July 30, 2018, cover might seem familiar: it was created by morphing images of two of the world's most recognizable men, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer said Trump needed to wake up to Russia's efforts to interfere in American elections. "I think he will. Let's see what happens", Trump said.

"The sentence should have been, 'I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russia.' Sort of a double negative", he added.

Clearly, the internet isn't buying it.

The White House said Wednesday that Russian Federation continues to pose a threat to the USA electoral system, just hours after President Donald Trump appeared to dismiss the threat.

"With that being said, all I can do is ask the question [of Putin]". "We're not going to have it, and that's the way it's going to be". "It is why I believe we are at a critical point", Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said Friday during an event at the Hudson Institute in Washington. But in return, Putin said he would expect the USA to allow Russian investigators to question what he called fugitives on American soil.

US intelligence officials have said Russia's efforts to undermine elections are continuing and now target the November 6 congressional races. Ahead of a cabinet meeting Wednesday, he seemed to have answered in the negative - "No" - to a question if he believed Russian Federation was still targeting the United States.

"I was interpreting what the president's intention was and stating the administration's policy", Sanders tried to explain.

Putin faces no serious political opposition at home, and leads a country that has never experienced a democratic transfer of power.

"Well, I would [consider him personally responsible], because he's in charge of the country", Trump told Glor.

"I've been trying my best to give the President the benefit of the doubt and always expressed potential other theories as to why he behaves as he does with respect to Russian Federation generally and Putin specifically", Clapper told CNN Thursday.

Mr. Trump has contradicted Coats recently, telling "CBS Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor that he doesn't know if he necessarily agrees with Coats' warning about the "critical" threat of potentially devastating cyberattacks targeting US systems.

In his morning tweets, Trump said he elicited a promise from Putin during their meeting to help negotiations with North Korea, but did not say how.

Newt Gingrich, a staunch Republican ally whose wife Clarissa Gingrich is Trump's ambassador to the Vatican, called the Helsinki news conference the "most serious mistake" of the Trump presidency.

Later, CBS News chief White House correspondent Major Garrett asked White House press secretary Sarah Sanders about the exchange during the White House briefing: "Cecilia (Vega) asked the president, 'Is Russia still targeting the U.S.?' He said 'No.' Is that what the president actually believes?"

When an American reporter asked Putin point-blank whether he had compromising material on Trump, Putin offered a lengthy and roundabout response, ultimately saying it was "difficult to imagine an utter nonsense of a bigger scale than this". "I put out a statement yesterday, within minutes after that press conference".

KIRO Radio's Dori Monson could have a new career in store as a speech-writer for President Trump.

Sanders called the legislation a "hypothetical" and declined to say whether the president would back it. "I dislike these people because they wanted to grab up so much power and use it against the American people", Paul continued.
