Corning's Gorilla Glass 6 Brings Improved Protection Against Multiple Drops

Corning's Gorilla Glass 6 Brings Improved Protection Against Multiple Drops

Corning states that Gorilla Glass 6 is built on a decade-long legacy of delivering the "toughest glass available" for consumer mobile glass devices. According to Corning, phones with the new cover glass survived 15 drops of 1 meter (3.28 feet) onto rough surfaces. Gorilla Glass 6 has been created to withstand these normal use case scenarios, which is good news for smartphone owners, particularly of higher end devices. The idea is that the new levels of compression will assist and help the device built with Gorilla Glass 6 survive multiple drops.

The company didn't put a specific ceiling on the height from which a Gorilla Glass 6-clad phone could probably survive, but it claimed Gorilla Glass 5 could endure spills from about five feet and three inches (1.6 meters) as much as 80% of the time. But next year's phones could be far more durable, as Corning has just announced Gorilla Glass 6. The engineers worked to create "an entirely new material" that can withstand those drops. "As consumers become more dependent on their smartphones, the chance of potentially damaging drops is on the rise". Scratch resistance qualities remain unchanged compared to Gorilla Glass 5. Gorilla Glass may not be ideal and does tend to crack when you least expect it, but it's the best in the market and does a good job of protecting a phone against nasty drops that everyone inevitably subjects it to. The debut of the new Gorilla Glass means that smartphone manufacturers will have a new glass to rely on since a lot of phones these days come with glass back, to support wireless charging.

Corning has launched the latest version of its widely used Gorilla Glass for smartphones and tablets.

Talking about the differences, Gorilla Glass DX brings enhanced visibility but the same level of scratch resistance as Gorilla Glass while Gorilla Glass DX+ adds a higher level of scratch resistance.

The company revealed more details about how Gorilla Glass 6 is made to CNBC. Gorilla Glass 6 is now "being evaluated by multiple customers" and will hit the market in the next few months.

The DX and DX+ follow the Gorilla Glass 6 and their main goal is to reduce reflection. However, it might be "several months" until it is first seen on shipping devices.
