Mars making closest approach to Earth in 15 years

Mars making closest approach to Earth in 15 years

The research team looked at the chemical composition of Mars dust using data collected by rovers and landers from different points across the Red Planet.

Mars will reach opposition on July 27. Mars will be at a distance of 35.8 million miles (57.6 million kilometers).

This year, Mars opposition will occur on July 27, according to NASA.

Meanwhile, numerous other Mars orbiters are helping scientists understand the dust storm.

Mars will shine bright and look bigger between now and Tuesday. Although 15 years might not sound like a particularly long time to some, H.R. MacMillan Space Centre astronomer Kat Kelly assures it will be a once-in-a-lifetime viewing opportunity for many based on the next time the two planets will be this close to one another.

A massive dust storm presently engulfing Mars, however, is obscuring surface details normally visible through telescopes.

Mars Close Approach takes place about every 26 months, but since Earth and Mars don't have perfectly circular orbits, the shortest distance between the planets isn't always the same for each close approach. First, a solar wind proton approaches Mars at high speed and encounters a cloud of hydrogen surrounding the planet. But Mars won't be as close as it was in 2003 until 2287. It makes it easier to see with telescopes or the naked eye.

"The answer was thievery", said Justin Deighan, of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, lead author of a paper on this research appearing July 23 in Nature Astronomy.

In 2003, Mars and Earth were at their closest in almost 60,000 years, coming within 34.6 million miles of each other. NASA notes that many missions to Mars coincide with these close approaches.

'Not quite as bright as Venus, but still because of the reddish, orange-ish-red colour, you really can't miss it in the sky'. "This is one of the largest weather events that we've seen on Mars", since spacecraft observations began in the 1960s, said Michael Smith, a scientist at NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center. In 1877, Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli claimed to have seen canals on Mars, suggesting there could be possible civilization, or Martians, on the red planet. Demeter said the best time to view the planet is from 10:30 p.m. through midnight.
