Whey to go: 3 food recalls linked to contaminated whey powder

Whey to go: 3 food recalls linked to contaminated whey powder

This spring, Dr. Dora Mills, the former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and a vice president at the University of New England in Biddeford, talked about the dangers that chickens can pose to people.

If you collect your chicken's eggs, wash them well before use and cook them thoroughly before eating.

An advisory said, "The federal agency is working with multiple states in investigating several outbreaks of salmonella infections linked to contact with live poultry in backyard flocks".

As of July 13, 212 people have been infected in 44 states, including Wisconsin. Usually, people recover in a few days without treatment, but in rare cases it can be fatal, and the elderly, infants, and people with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable.

So far, no cases of salmonella infection have been reported.

Florida, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Minnesota and MI have each had at least 10 people who were infected.

There have been no complaints of illness reported in connection with the affected products.

Of those sick, 72 percent of people told the CDC that they had contact with chicks or ducklings in the week before their illnesses started.

The CDC estimates Salmonella causes around 1 million illnesses and 450 deaths each year in the U.S.

The CDC said even though the communicated about more multi-state outbreaks than usual this year, current data does not suggest foodborne illnesses or outbreaks are increasing. The agency also said to not let children under 5 to handle or touch chicks, ducklings and other live poultry without supervision. They also advise not letting live birds inside the house, especially where food or drink is prepared, served or stored.

People who fall ill with salmonella experience diarrhea, stomach cramps, and sometimes a fever as well.

The trendiness of backyard chickens has probably contributed to the rise in these illnesses, Nichols added, as more people want to know where their food comes from and are providing it for themselves.
