Blueprints for 3D-printed guns could be available this week

Blueprints for 3D-printed guns could be available this week

Bob Ferguson, Washington State Attorney General says, "We were asking for a nationwide temporary restraining order, putting a halt to this outrageous decision by the federal government to allow these 3D downloadable guns to be available around our country and around the world".

Eight Democratic attorneys general filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to block the federal government's settlement with the company that makes the plans available online.

The suit says anyone with access to the blueprint and a 3D printer can easily make or sell a weapon - even those barred by law from owning firearms.

"These downloadable guns are unregistered and very hard to detect, even with metal detectors, and will be available to anyone regardless of age, mental health or criminal history", said Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson.

Washington's Attorney General, Bob Ferguson, said at a press conference before filing the lawsuit on Monday that the Trump administration's settlement was "unprecedented and not only disastrous for public safety but undermines our state laws meant to keep firearms out of the hands of risky individuals".

They're untraceable, undetectable, and unavailable now that a federal judge blocked a company's plans to publish blueprints for 3D printed guns.

The site features downloadable blueprints for a variety of firearms, including the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, the AR-10 battle rifle as well as the Liberator, a single-shot handgun.

Wilson, a gun rights activists, has been arguing that the First Amendment protects his constitutional right to share the 3D files as free speech.

"Should any tyrants wish to chill or infringe the rights of the People, we would welcome the opportunity to defend freedom whenever, wherever, and however necessary", the statement said, "Hand-waving and hyperbole are not compelling government interests and censorship is not proper tailoring under the law".

That prospect has startled gun control advocates, who say it could worsen the epidemic of gun violence in the USA and make it easier for terrorists to gain access to a raft of deadly firearms.

Trump wrote on Twitter the idea "doesn't seem to make much sense!".

The administration of US President Donald Trump failed to explain why it settled the case and allowed the publication of the blueprints, Ferguson said.

In a recent interview with Fox News, Defense Distributed director Cody Wilson described current 3D-printed guns as "mostly curiosities", and said that the "big" and "bulky" characteristics of the weapons would help identify them.

The firm's designs would allow owners of 3D-printers to create their own plastic firearms. Critics say it open up a Pandora's box of what they call ghost guns. They are not usually very accurate. "The age of the downloadable gun formally begins", the website states.

The State Department reversed course in late June, agreeing to allow Wilson to resume posting the blueprints.

The company filed its own suit in Texas on Sunday, asserting that it is the victim of an "ideologically fuelled programme of intimidation and harassment" that violates the company's First Amendment rights.

The states sought a restraining order and an injunction to block the gun info from being posted on the internet.
