For Big Mac's 50th anniversary, McDonald's is giving away free burgers

For Big Mac's 50th anniversary, McDonald's is giving away free burgers

McDonald's Corp. (MCD) is celebrating its 50th anniversary by rolling out its own "global currency", dubbed MacCoin, which will be available while supplies last.

For instance, Swiss burger fans can come to the United States, stock up on Big Mac coins, then return to Switzerland, where they will be able to get a Big Mac for about a dollar less.

McDonald's teased MacCoin in a video released Monday, before Thursday's launch. "Creating innovative guest experiences alongside much-loved menu classics is key".

"Just as in the rest of the world, Big Mac deserves the status it has in Croatia, where it is one of our most sought-after products".

Get direct access to our top weekly content, contests, and perks.

While MacCoin won't appreciate in value in the bank, each of the more than 6.2 million coins being distributed can be redeemed for a Big Mac at McDonald's restaurants in more than 50 countries.

The coins feature five unique designs, each representing a decade of the legendary sandwich.

Though sales figures show that trendier burgers are cutting into McDonalds' business, the chain says it has no intention of messing with the Big Mac.

The Thursday launch date was selected for the brass-colored coins because it would've been the 100th birthday of Jim Delligatti, a McDonald's franchisee in western Pennsylvania who invented the Big Mac.

According to McDonald's, 14,000 restaurants in the USA will participate in the promotion. The '90s will be defined by bold, abstract shapes, while the early '00s will specifically focus on the technology that was at the forefront of the turn of the century. It's loosely based off the Big Mac Index, an idea first published by the Economist that used burgers to measure a nation's purchasing power parity. "Since 1968, Big Mac fans across the greater Philadelphia area have enjoyed two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a sesame seed bun with a flavor that's just as craveable and delicious today".

Over the course of its 50 year history, the Big Mac has become an ubiquitous global icon.
