Thieves steal priceless Swedish crown jewels in brazen heist

Thieves steal priceless Swedish crown jewels in brazen heist

The Swedish crown jewels have been stolen by thieves who escaped in a motorboat.

The jewels - including two crowns and an orb, were taken from Strängnäs Cathedral. Karl IX's crown is made of gold, rock crystal, enamel and pearls, and Christina's is made...

"I have talked to someone at the county administrative board that says it is not possible to put an economic value on them - these are invaluable objects of national interest'".

"The score is 1-0 for them right now, but we don't know what it will be like tomorrow", Agnevik said.

Two men were seen jumping into a motorboat outside the cathedral, the Mirror reports.

Police believe that the perpetrators might have abandoned the motorboat, transferred to a auto, and are either going west, or east towards the capital Stockholm.

"We are on land, in the water and in the air", a police spokesperson told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Strangnas is a small, quiet town with a population of about 13,000.

An official with the Swedish police's National Operations Department told a local media outlet that she thought the stolen goods would be "impossible to sell" due to how unique and recognizable they were.

The cathedral was closed today, and a grassy area by the jetty was cordoned off as police inspected the ground for clues.

Police tape is pictured at Strangnas Cathedral after thieves stole royal crowns from the 17th century, in Strangnas, Sweden July 31, 2018.

It was a daring daytime heist involving crown jewels, a cathedral, a speedboat, and little in the way of clues, at least so far. Police also questioned witnesses who were inside the church at the time of the theft and people outside who saw the suspects get away.
