Chipotle shuts OH restaurant after reports of illness

Chipotle shuts OH restaurant after reports of illness

The burrito chain briefly closed down one of its restaurants in Powell, Ohio Monday after a number of customers became sick.

The local health officials said it received illness reports from seven customers on July 29 and July 30.

More than 400 people said they fell ill after eating at an Ohio Chipotle that is thought to be at the center of an illness outbreak, according to a website that tracks foodborne illnesses. The restaurant's address is 9733 Sawmill Pkwy. The restaurant was shut down on Monday after an investigation was launched, but it's expected to reopen Tuesday afternoon.

Chipotle's stock fell 3.3 percent in after-hours trading on Monday after Business Insider first reported the news.

The local health department, called the Delaware General Health District, is investigating the possible illness outbreak.

The chain has been struggling with food-safety issues since 2015, and has since implemented safety standards and food-handling procedures in hopes of preventing similar occurrences.

She said 33 stool sample kits were delivered Tuesday to people that reported illness.

Chipotle is also using ozone treatment to help with sanitizing, and the report said that the restaurant does a daily employee health check to ensure no workers are experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea or nausea.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc has shut a restaurant in OH following reports of customers falling sick after eating there, Business Insider reported on Monday.

Traci Whittaker, a public information officer, said the department wasn't aware of the pathogen that caused the illnesses, according to Reuters.

The primary concern for the company surrounding the OH situation is likely the threat of renewed perception among customers that the food is unsafe.

"Chipotle is a special case, because they were the source of so many cases in such a short amount of time", Ben Chapman, an associate professor and food safety extension specialist at North Carolina State University, told CBS MoneyWatch.
