Man's legs amputated after dog's licks lead to infection, family says

Man's legs amputated after dog's licks lead to infection, family says

- A Wisconsin man lost both of his legs from an infection that spread throughout his body as a result of bacteria that came from dog saliva.

Exactly how Manteufel contracted the bacteria is unknown, but doctors suspect that a lick from his own dog likely started the entire process.

Greg Manteufel, of West Bend, Wisc., landed in the emergency room last month with what he thought was the flu, Fox 6 Now reported.

'Looked like somebody beat him up with a baseball bat.

Dawn Manteufel said life as the couple knew it changed forever when blood tests revealed an infection caused by the bacteria capnocytophaga.

The infection caused Greg's blood pressure to massively drop, which meant that the circulation was cut off and eventually led to the loss of his legs. "Surprisingly enough, they did do it", Dawn Manteufel said.

Manteufel's doctor says his case was a rare, unfortunate situation.

The family has since set up a GoFundMe to raise money for the operations and rehabilitation that Manteufel will need, and it's already raised over $10,000.

A bacteria called Capnocytophaga canimorsus attacked Greg Manteufel quickly and aggressively.

According to a yarn from Fox News reporter Kasey Chronis, his devastating loss could have been caused by something as simple as being licked by his dog. In fact, it can also be found in human mouths, and is usually not harmful - it causes what's known as "opportunistic infections", normally only affecting people with weakened immune systems. Her husband has a history of good health and spent his life around dogs, which is why it caught them off guard.

Dr Silvia Munoz-Price, an infectious disease specialist with Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, told WITI that Mr Manteufel's case is an extremely rare occurrence and that pet owners need not panic. "Within days of being admitted to the hospital while still fighting for his life, Greg first lost both feet, after a second surgery to remove more damage on legs, they amputated thru both Knee caps [sic]". "It's just chance", Dr. Munoz-Price added. While the infection had been seen before in people who'd been bitten by dogs, the doctors noted it was highly unusual that this woman apparently contracted it from her dog who had licked her.
