Samsung Revenue Falls 4% in Q2

Samsung Revenue Falls 4% in Q2

The Galaxy Tab S4 also features Samsung's Knox enterprise security suite, optional LTE support, a 13MP rear camera, 8MP front-facing camera and four iPad Pro-esque speakers, which Samsung says are turned by AKG.

Adding to its troubles, its vice-chairman Lee Jae-yong, scion of Samsung's founding family, was jailed past year for his part in the sprawling corruption scandal that brought down former president Park Geun-hye.

Consolidated operating profit stood at 14.87 trillion won (13.3 billion USA dollars) in the April-June quarter, up 5.7 percent from the same period of a year ago.

Higher marketing expenses and the disappointing performance of the flagship S9 smartphone, which fell short of its sales target, weighed on its mobile performance, Samsung said.

The company added however that robust demand for memory chips helped boost the operating profit. According to Samsung, the device is not performing well in the market as its sales margin is low. Revenue for the second quarter tallied 58.48 trillion won, down 4.1 percent on year and 3.4 percent on quarter.

Demand for Samsung's flexible OLED panels also dropped, while LCD shipments fell in price and quantity.

The Galaxy Tab S4 will start shipping in on 10 August, one day after the Note 9's unveiling.

Competition from cheaper Chinese brands like Xiaomi Corp 1810.HK and Huawei have already seen Samsung lose market share in China and India, the world's top smartphone markets.

"Consumers are losing the belief that the next version of a smartphone is actually smarter", Paul Swiercz, a management professor at George Washington University, told Bloomberg News.

Of course, even if true, these prices only relate to Korea. The announcement will take place on August 9th and it's expected to be released later this month.

By business unit, the Semiconductor Business continued to deliver strong earnings, driven by demand for DRAM chips used in data centers and NAND flash memory for high-capacity storage, amid a softening of NAND prices.

But Samsung's mobile business witnessed a 34 percent fall in operating profit to 2.7 trillion won ($1.8bn) in the second quarter, its biggest decline since the Galaxy S7. Its semiconductor sector's operating profit will reach 13.57 trillion won and mobile division will post 2.6 trillion won.
