Andy Murray starting from scratch at Citi Open

Andy Murray converted on his seventh match point to beat Mackenzie McDonald in three sets and set up a tie against fellow Brit Kyle Edmund at the Citi Open.

The former World No. 1 defeated American Mackenzie McDonald 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 after two hours, 37 minutes to clinch his second victory of the season (2-2) in just his third tournament back from hip surgery, which he underwent in January.

The 31-year-old Murray won the China Open in 2016 and was unable to defend his title in 2017 due to a hip injury.

"It could have gone either way".

"I want to stay healthy through the end of the year", Murray said.

He added: 'It wasn't so much thinking about hanging the rackets up, I've always planned and wanted to come back. I chased balls down. "I just fought and tried to make it tough for him", Murray said. Murray made minor adjustments and improvements to his game, winning more points off his forehand, improving the pace and depth on his regular groundstrokes. "But mentally, it was a big one to get through".

McDonald was once again playing at a strong level in the second set, but from 4-3 in the set, where the finishing line was drawing closer, McDonald's coolness and calmness under pressure completely left him and that was the moment where Murray started to find a way back into the match as he sensed a first real vulnerability in the level of his opponent.

The former world number one, now ranked 832, is continuing his protracted recovery from long-term hip trouble. Not until June did he return to competition, competing in two Wimbledon warm-up tournaments. This time previous year Edmund started his U.S. hard-court swing with a semi-final finish in Atlanta and it would be no surprise if Edmund makes another decent run during Washington. If I win a couple of matches here, I could move up 300, 400 spots in a week, which is nice. "I was struggling on my serve and didn't feel like I had much rhythm".

"I hadn't played in darkness or under the lights in a really long time and I felt my rhythm was off", Murray said. "Maybe tennis could do a better job of being a bit more transparent with that and kind of showing exactly how many tests everyone has had".

In addition to Murray, notable men's field entrants so far include 17-time Grand Slam victor and defending China Open champion Rafael Nadal, 2009 US Open victor Juan Martin del Potro and world number three, rising star Alexander Zverev.
