HUD Requires Residents to go Smoke Free

HUD Requires Residents to go Smoke Free

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development created a no-smoking policy to stop the spread of second hand smoke in multi-unit buildings that went into effect today.

You can no longer smoke inside of public housing properties or near them.

Public housing tenants must sign smoke-free contracts and can face eviction if they break the rule.

ALS says they are working with public housing authorities to help make the transition to a smoke-free environment.

"You have the second-hand smoke dangers, but also the time and the cost of turning around a unit where a family has been smoking", says D.J. Haynes, the Parkersburg Housing Authority's Executive Director. Each agency may also choose to ban electronic or e-cigarettes.

The rule prohibits the use of all cigarettes, cigars and pipes in all units, common areas, administrative offices and outdoor areas within 25 feet of the facility.

Many senior citizens were around during the time when there were no bans on smoking, allowing consumers to smoke in places like restaurants and non-hospitality workplaces. "Then, there would probably be an issue if they get caught smoking cigarettes - then there's the fine, paying money, or being put out.but, to each his own".

In a brochure, HUD explains that the agency believes that "secondhand smoke hurts everyone".

It excludes residents living in homes under the Housing Choice Voucher Program, formerly known as Section 8.

The Belmont Housing Authority made the switch in May.

Tenants who break the rules under the new smoking ban, risk being evicted after three violations.
