India look for quick wickets on Day 3

India look for quick wickets on Day 3

It was a captain's knock from Virat.

Kohli farmed the strike brilliantly during a last-wicket stand of 57 with Yadav, who faced 16 balls for his unbeaten one.

Cook was bowled by a terrific delivery from Ravi Ashwin after India captain Virat Kohli had turned to his spinner as early as the seventh over.

This was after India quickly wrapped up the English innings, who lost their last seven wickets for a mere 71 runs. That still left the tourists 70 runs behind.

Adil Rashid was introduced in to the attack just before lunch after his controversial return to Test cricket, the spinner starting with a nervous full toss and his one over costing five runs.

Those three Curran wickets fell in the space of 13 balls, you had a couple of catches put down by England, reviews overturned and, at the heart of it all, Kohli battling through to a fine century. Yes, he was dropped twice but that does not take away from the fact Edgbaston got to witness a master at work.

The visitors suffered some early blows in their reply to England's modest first innings total of 287.

Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli then tried to weather the storm.

The second session started as the first had ended, with a wicket. Keaton Jennings was not out on 5 at the close of play. That left Kohli and Co. on 100 for four. It was the all-rounder's 100th Test wicket and evidence, if any were needed, of just what an exciting talent he is.

Malan dropped Kohli on 21 at second slip off Jimmy Anderson, then again on 51 off Ben Stokes - a tougher chance as he dived to his right.

Speaking after his Headingley innings, Root had admitted he "would not hear the end of it", adding that his own team-mates had been ribbing him incessantly for the gesture.

India have always been criticised for their poor close catching but England's slip cordon is not the most reliable either and, with the tourists still on 100, two chances went begging. He batted with dogged perseverance as he scored more than fifty percent of his team's runs.

Sam Curran (24) and James Anderson (0) were at the crease when umpires dislodged the bails for the day.

"It was one of those things in the heat of the moment", he said.

Vijay was solid as usual, leaving the ball well, while Dhawan looked to play down the ground.

Two balls later Curran dismissed KL Rahul via a flat-bat drag-on.

But Kohli battled through, as great players do, and now has a very cherished first Test ton in England.

Root, on 80 at the time, had been dominating India's bowling in a century partnership with his fellow Yorkshireman, Jonny Bairstow, when he fatefully responded to Bairstow's call for a second run to midwicket in the first hour of the final session.
