Suspect identified in fatal shooting of George H.W. Bush's cardiologist

Suspect identified in fatal shooting of George H.W. Bush's cardiologist

Police allege Pappas shot Hausknecht while the cardiologist rode his bike to work at Houston Methodist Hospital.

The gunman rode past the doctor before turning around to kill him, police say.

Police are searching for Joseph James Pappas in Houston and have warned he should be considered armed, risky and possibly suicidal. Acevedo said officers found evidence connecting the suspect to Hausknecht's death while searching his home, but Pappas was not there. "There was a lot of planning and, sadly, some skill", Chief Acevedo said.

"There was a lot of planning that went into this". A warrant has been issued for Pappas on a charge of murder. Acevedo praised the community, which includes a heavy Hispanic population, for coming forward to cooperate with police.

A tip on Tuesday led police to suspect Pappas, the chief said, though he didn't elaborate as to the nature of the tip. The suspect was carrying a green backpack that investigators believe concealed the gun.

A Painesville woman has unwittingly become party to the investigation of a man suspected of killing one of former President George H.W. Bush's doctors.

"I called him on the 24th and he said he had a terminal illness, and that's why he deeded (me) the house", Spencer told the paper. Police urged anyone with information on Pappas' whereabouts to call 911.

Local officials say they do not know what may have prompted the killing so many years after Mr Pappas' mother's death. "He didn't seem like someone who would hurt anybody", she said.

One of Spencer's daughters was supposed to meet Pappas on July 30 when she visited Houston.

Pappas' mother died on the doctor's operating table more than 20 years ago, according to police.

The bike isn't the only indication that Pappas may be living in the past.

Pappas took law enforcement classes through August a year ago, documents indicate. He worked for Harris County as a peace officer and a reserve officer from May 1983 to July 2013. They ask for the public's continued support of law enforcement's efforts in finding and apprehending this unsafe and armed individual as soon as possible.

On Armslist.com, a website where people can sell firearms, someone with the same phone number as Pappas' real estate company had several listings for a variety of weapons and accessories, including a.38-caliber revolver, a semi-automatic rifle and some bulletproof vests.

The couple lived in an upscale neighborhood not far from the Texas Medical Center in southwest Houston.
