US says Russia still carrying out 'pervasive' election meddling

US says Russia still carrying out 'pervasive' election meddling

Trump's tweet came just days after the New York Times reported the special counsel is examining the president's tweets as part of a potential obstruction of justice case. "People in New Mexico and across the country are exhausted of ultra-rich and powerful people like Donald Trump trying to abuse their power to protect themselves", he wrote on Twitter. The president then lashed out at Robert Mueller, comparing the special counsel's entourage to a biased angry and anti-Republican mob only interested in causing further trouble for the Trump administration. "While the President has been inconsistent in his tweets, and some of the messaging that he's put on it, he's the only one in the government that hasn't been paying attention to this".

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment about Trump's call for Sessions to end the investigation.

Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) said it was obvious to him that Trump's demand of Sessions was obstruction of justice.

But Sherman reports that Trump was serious about the apparent command and that he's considering firing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees the Mueller probe due to Sessions' recusal.

"The trail of evidence regarding conspiracy, money laundering and obstruction of justice is leading closer to the President and people important to him".

He added: "There are two things specifically that are worrying Donald Trump at the moment".

Democratic lawmakers criticized Trump for seeking an end to the probe and urged that Congress protect the investigation.

Jens David Ohlin, a law professor at Cornell University, said the tweets would likely not be seen as an order to Sessions, but as "Trump venting his continued frustration with the fact that he can't control the Russian Federation investigation".

In another tweet, Trump sought to distance himself from Manafort, saying he "worked for me for a very short time" and noting that he had also served Ronald Reagan, former Senator Bob Dole of Kansas, and "many other highly prominent and respected political leaders".

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who has drawn the ire of Trump amid the investigation, said the United States should "never accept" Trump's demand for Sessions to end the probe.

A senior US official said the Russian meddling campaign had accelerated and grown more sophisticated since the 2016 election and was not directed at boosting one political party over another.

But Mr Manafort is not accused of aiding Russia's alleged attempts to sway the 2016 presidential election Mr Trump's way, a focus of the Mueller investigation.

Their comments during a White House briefing came after Trump publicly undermined the conclusions of US intelligence agencies regarding Russian interference.

Though Trump has questioned whether Russian Federation was involved in the 2016 election, national intelligence director Dan Coats said, "We continue to see a pervasive messaging campaign by Russian Federation to try to weaken and divide the United States".

Special counsel Robert Mueller is eyeing Russian singer Emin Agalarov as part of his probe concerning Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 US election.

He later raised the question of whether Manafort was being treated worse than Alphonse "Al" Capone, misspelling the American gangster's name in a tweet.

Litman, meanwhile, told anchor Brooke Baldwin that he would construe Trump's tweet as a command.

"I don't know why Rudy seemed to think that obstruction by tweet is a insane notion", Rodgers said.
