Fortnite for Android is going to bypass the Google Play Store

Fortnite for Android is going to bypass the Google Play Store

The reality of the situation is that the Android OS is open enough to allow companies like Epic Games to invest in rolling their own solution for installing apps without any significant impact, other than potentially the discoverability benefits that the Play Store offers. It's easy to understand why: hosting the game download themselves and having the installation skip the Play Store will also skip Google's commission on its lucrative in-app purchases, the monetization strategy for essentially all free-to-play games. Now, Epic's Tim Sweeney has confirmed that information, calling Google's store tax a "high" and unnecessary cost in the mobile game industry. The game's launch was delayed because Samsung and Epic Games will reportedly be partnering to launch Fortnite Mobile at the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 unveiling on August 9th.

The news confirms rumours that began circulating earlier in the week, but it remains to be seen how much of an encumbrance this direct distribution model will be for Android users.

However, there's quite a big catch in that it won't be available to download on the Google Play Store.

Fortnite still has no release date on Android, but it's rumored to be exclusive on Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 9 for its first 30 days.

That's set to change in the coming weeks as developer Epic Games gets set to make the game available for a clutch of Android-powered smartphones.

There are many reasons the company may wish to do this, but as we pointed out at the time, chief among them could be the desire to avoid Google's hefty 30 percent Play Store revenue cut. There's a rationale for this on console where there's enormous investment in hardware, often sold below cost, and marketing campaigns in broad partnership with publishers. "30 percent is disproportionate to the cost of the services these stores perform, such as payment processing, download bandwidth, and customer service", the Epic CEO said. Obviously, that will require Android users some extra preparations that will allow them to install apps from third-party services. By releasing its own installer application, we're basically crossing our fingers that every person who downloads it can tell the difference between legitimate software and software that could hold their device ransom.

Android's default app install security will need to be disabled to play Fortnite.
