Spanish pilots union sues Ryanair over contracts

Spanish pilots union sues Ryanair over contracts

"For over a month, the union has said that industrial action is likely to continue until there is substantial movement on the pilots' reasonable demands for an agreement on a fair and transparent approach to base transfers and related matters", pilots' union Fórsa said in the statement.

A month earlier in a memo seen by Reuters Ryanair said time-off duties for the pilots committee remained an issue but there was little between the two sides and it was hopeful of a deal.

Europe's biggest airline by passenger numbers agreed to recognise unions for the first time late past year but negotiations since have faltered.

Trade union Forsa, of which the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (IALPA) is a branch, said directly employed Ryanair pilots in Ireland would stage their fifth one-day strike since July 12 beginning at 0100 on August 10 in an ongoing dispute about working conditions including base transfers.

The union said Ryanair's "hostile relations to its employees" have been on show on "several occasions, lately through intimidations and threats to Irish pilots after they used their legal right to strike".

Around a quarter of its Dublin-based pilots staged their third 24-hour stoppage in two weeks on Tuesday while cabin crew in Italy, Spain, and began a two-day strike on Wednesday, prompting to cancel more than 12 per cent of its flights.

So far that has forced Ryanair to cancel 6% of the more than 2,400 flights it has scheduled across Europe next Friday - a further 20 to and from Ireland, 22 in and out of Sweden and 104 in Belgium.

Ryanair spokesperson Kenny Jacob responded to news of the strikes and said: "This fifth strike notice by Forsa is irresponsible, unwarranted and is disrupting customers".

"There is going to be disruption, it will be small, we will manage it".

The pilots, who are striking today, confirmed they will refuse to work from 1am on August 10.

Warning investors on Monday of more strikes this summer, Michael O'Leary said he would consider moving aircraft from Ireland, and and acted swiftly within 48 hours.

Ryanair condemned the planned fifth day of strikes.
