Newcastle United 'close to signing Salomon Rondon'

Newcastle United 'close to signing Salomon Rondon'

I can say nothing yet, but hopefully we have some news in a couple of days.

The tweet immediately went down very badly with Newcastle fans, with many taking the time to vent their fury at the 61-year-old.

Less than 24 hours after manager Rafa Benitez had said "things are not going well off the pitch and you can see a reflection of that on the pitch" in the wake of a 4-0 friendly defeat to Braga, the Magpies have acted by bringing in Muto.

Muto has joined Rafael Benitez's side from Mainz in the Bundesliga and has become United's fifth signing of the summer.

Muto, 26, is Newcastle's fourth permanent signing of the close season following goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, midfielder Ki Sung-yueng and defender Fabian Schar.

Muto was equally delighted after becoming the first Japanese player to represent the Magpies.

And in his post-match press conference, he was quoted as saying: "It was a bad game".

"You're a very fearless man if you go out and criticise the owners, which to be fair is what he's doing", The former England boss told talkSPORT. We did not do things the way we have to. We were poor and we made too many mistakes.

When asked what he was referring to in terms of off-pitch matters, he said: "Everything". He gave the same response when asked if there was money to spend.

The former Burnley forward is another Benitez has had his eye on for quite a while, and although the Anfield outfit are said to be holding out for £20 million, the Toon boss is hoping his former club will allow the England man to leave on loan. "I think we still need three or four players".

"We have won trophies everywhere and we will try to do something similar here".

Newcastle begin their league campaign by hosting Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park on Aug 11.
