'Steely' Curran stars as England prepare for life without Stokes

'Steely' Curran stars as England prepare for life without Stokes

Anderson, Curran and Ben Stokes claimed a wicket apiece but Kohli and Dinesh Karthik's unbroken 32-run stand left India needing a further 84 to win on Saturday. In the match local team England won the toss and chose to bat first. As the man-of-the-match Sam Curran pointed out, he had sought to learn from Kohli how to bat in tougher circumstances as much as he tried to learn from the seniors in his team.

India's appalling record of no wins and just one draw from Tests in Birmingham stretching back to 1967 continues.

But the match swung strongly England's way when Stokes trapped Kohli leg before wicket for 51, leaving the tourists on 7-141 despite an unsuccessful appeal by the India captain. There were couple of moments when we came back, showed character there.

"A team like England is relentless, they made us work very hard for our runs".

"The series is set up nicely now". Our shot selection could have been better.

England skipper Joe Root was thrilled with the result.

He said Kohli's continued presence gives India "a lot of confidence" that they can take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Watch the second Test between England and India from 10am, Thursday on Sky Sports Cricket and Main Event.

The sun was out at Edgbaston but the ball was doing enough to trouble the batsmen. They played 76 overs in the first innings and scored 274 runs and lost all wickets. Ashwin's contribution is another huge positive from the Edgbaston Test, for like Kohli, his effectiveness or the lack of it in English conditions was scrutinised threadbare.

One does not know whether the unpredictable selections by Kohli and Shastri are surprising their opponents but they are certainly unsettling Team India. "He also went away with England U-19s to the World Cup in his last school year but still completed his exams".

With a first innings total of 287 to defend, veteran pacers Stuart Broad and James Anderson opened the bowling for England.

Ishant Sharma (11), who has a county half-century this summer, came down as low as number ten, and looked more comfortable than Shami immediately.

"It was a great surface that made for some great Test cricket and I think it's important that you don't underestimate how well people have bowled on there", said Root. Paceman Umesh Yadav rattled the stumps of Rashid, who survived 40 deliveries.

India pace bowler Ishant Sharma took 5-51 - including three wickets in an over - to undermine England's second innings.

Kohli was unbeaten on 24 and Hardik on 10 after India openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan had put on 50 for the first wicket before lunch.

Ultimately though, England fans and players alike were spared the levels of anxiety suffered at Edgbaston in 2005 or Trent Bridge in 2013 as Stokes tempted Pandya (31) outside off, the ball sliding off the edge and into the grateful hands of Alastair Cook at first slip with India still 31 runs shy of parity.
