NASCAR CEO Brian France arrested on DUI, possession of oxycodone

NASCAR CEO Brian France arrested on DUI, possession of oxycodone

NASCAR chairman Brian France has been arrested in New York's Hamptons for driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of oxycodone.

"Mr. France was observed operating a 2017 Lexus northbound on Main Street failing to stop at a duly posted stop sign", the news release says.

He was given a field sobriety test and failed, and was then taken to a police station where he was officially charged with DUI and possession of a controlled substance.

Brian France was taken into custody around 7:30 p.m. last night (August 5th) by the Sag Harbor Police Department.

The company previously called France's arrest a "serious matter".

France said in a statement Monday that his indefinite leave will be used to focus on his "personal affairs".

France has been the chairman of NASCAR since 2003, following his father Bill France Jr. and grandfather William H.G. France, who started the organization in 1948.

After a night in jail, he was released following his arraignment Monday morning.

This latest reported incident comes just after NASCAR was celebrating the first win of Elliott's career. But sagging TV ratings, dwindling attendance and the loss of some key sponsors have weighed on the business in recent years.

NASCAR was created by William H.G. France, a stock vehicle driver and gas station owner, in 1947 and has stayed in the France family's name.

France later told an officer called to his home that he was drinking a soda and "bumped into something".

She said she also watched as France "fell over his own feet" as he got out of his auto.

Her statement, for reasons unknown, never was attached to the police report, according to the Press.
