Petition calls for Ohio State to 'save' Urban Meyer amid investigation

Petition calls for Ohio State to 'save' Urban Meyer amid investigation

Ohio State will rely on an outside law firm to investigate what coach Urban Meyer knew and did about domestic abuse accusations against a former assistant, a process expected to be completed within two weeks, the university said Sunday night.

In the midst of Ohio State's investigation into whether or not head coach Urban Meyer was aware of alleged domestic violence by former assistant Zach Smith, fans of the Buckeyes have gathered to host a rally for Meyer, who is now on paid administrative leave.

According to Jackie Orozco of ABC 6 Columbus, the rally was organized by Jeff Hamms, an Ohio State fan from Myrtle Beach, S.C. who is known to others by the nickname "Tennessee Jeff".

At Big Ten media day last month, Meyer said he had no knowledge of those allegations.

Smith's ex-wife Courtney Smith told Stadium that Meyer's wife knew about the incident in 2015. Now the head coach at Boston College, he said in a statement: "While an assistant coach at Florida in 2009, I was aware that there was an issue in the personal life of Zach and Courtney Smith".

It's quite possibly the first time Sage Steele, Paul Finebaum, Mark May, and Brett McMurphy, the journalist who broke the explosive Meyer story last week, have ever appeared together in a person's mind or sign.

In the meantime, a "Save Urban Meyer" petition posted Thursday at Change.org has almost reached its goal of 25,000 signatures.

Colleges that hired Smith after his arrest in 2009 on suspicion of aggravated battery against his pregnant wife have been asked whether they knew about that alleged incident. "I support Urban Meyer & the Bucks". The petition was started by Buckeyes fan Blake Firestone.

Smith was part of Meyer's staff at Florida from 2005-09 and at Ohio State from 2012-17. "It's Urban Meyer, and people want to be a part of it to show that they support him".
