Qatari pressure on long-term truce deal between Hamas and Israel in Gaza

Qatari pressure on long-term truce deal between Hamas and Israel in Gaza

Twenty-nine fires erupted in Israeli communities ‎near the Gaza Strip border in a single day this week, as Palestinian ‎arson terrorism continued to wreak havoc near the ‎volatile frontier.

It said some 8,000 Gazans had participated in the protests at five locations along the border.

The delegation was welcomed by Hamas leader Ismail Haniya and members of the group's political bureau.

Israel, the United States and other Western countries regard Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Israel insists its blockade is necessary to isolate Gaza's Islamist Hamas rulers, with which it has fought three wars since 2008.

Under worldwide law, said the report, while addressing its military and security needs in areas along the perimeter fence, Israel is obliged to avoid causing disproportionate harm to the lives and livelihoods of the Palestinian population.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly cancelled a planned visit to Columbia in order to be close to further possible developments in the truce negotiations.

Palestinian protesters gather during a protest at the Gaza Strip's border with Israel, Friday, Aug. 3, 2018.

In a statement, the Israeli military said the vessel was carrying 12 people and had been taken to the port of Ashdod.

At least 156 Palestinians have been killed in the protests and one Israeli soldier was shot dead by a sniper in Gaza.

Global experts and aid organizations including the United Nations have repeatedly called the Israeli policy a collective punishment against Gazans for what Israel perceives as a threat by the Islamic Resistance group Hamas.

At its widest extent, said the report, the access restricted area included a "no go area" reaching up to 500 meters on the Gaza side of the fence, and a "high risk area", based on Palestinian risk perceptions, extending from the "no go area" up to 1,500 meters from the fence. The delegation is in Gaza amid high-level discussions about an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire.

On Sunday, the Israeli navy intercepted a Norwegian-flagged activist boat that was part of the flotilla.

Activists have made several attempts to breach the blockade in recent years, most notably in 2010, when Israeli naval commandos killed nine Turks in a raid at sea.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment.
