Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey explains why Alex Jones is not banned

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey explains why Alex Jones is not banned

"We're going to hold Jones to the same standard we hold to every account, not taking one-off actions to make us feel good in the short term, and adding fuel to new conspiracy theories", Dorsey said in a tweet. "This is what serves the public conversation best".

First reported by Buzzfeed News, the move comes after Spotify recently pulled a handful of Jones's podcasts from its own platform.

But in case the service's position was not entirely clear, Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey further shed light on its stance via a series of tweets late Tuesday.

Apple's decision to remove all episodes of Jones' popular show - rather than just specific offending episodes - is one of the largest enforcement actions meant to curb conspiratorial news content by a technology company to date.

A set of new rules on "hateful conduct and abusive behavior", implemented by Twitter at the end of past year, added additional content, such as "hateful imagery", to the category of material banned because it constitutes "specific threats of violence or wishing for serious physical harm, death, or disease to an individual or group of people".

Dorsey took a thinly veiled swipe at Facebook and YouTube, which acted only after Apple removed Jones, by saying Twitter did not "simply react to outside pressure".

Jones' Facebook account has also been suspended for 30 days but he still has a "verified" Twitter account. "Podcasts that violate these guidelines are removed from our directory making them no longer searchable or available for download or streaming". Jack Dorsey explained on Tuesday why both remain on the platform.

"While we welcome everyone to express themselves on our service, we prohibit targeted behaviour that harasses, threatens, or uses fear to silence the voices of others".

U.S. radio host Alex Jones (C) uses a megaphone to speak to crowds near the Quicken Loans Arena, the venue for the 2016 Republican National Convention.

That may actually win it some support from liberals who detest Alex Jones but worry about the power of Google and Facebook to decide what is allowed on the internet.
