Japan marks 73rd anniversary of Hiroshima bomb

Japan marks 73rd anniversary of Hiroshima bomb

Abe delivered an address at the Peace Memorial Ceremony in Hiroshima on Monday, the anniversary of the USA atomic bombing of the city in 1945.

Abe, whose government has chosen not to participate in the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, said Japan had a responsibility to bridge the gap between nuclear and non-nuclear nations.

Abe said Japan is determined to act as a bridge between the 2 sides, and to be an worldwide leader.

Three days later, a second USA atomic bomb killed 70,000 people in Nagasaki. The global representation was the third largest on record. It was the first use of nuclear weapons against human beings. U.S. Ambassador to Japan William F. Hagerty IV made his first appearance at the ceremony since he was sworn in for the current post in July of a year ago.

To accelerate Japan's surrender in the WWII, the US forces dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively on August 6 and August 9, 1945.

During the ceremony, Matsui started his "peace declaration" with these words: "It's 73 years ago and a Monday morning, just like today".

Pigeons fly over the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 2018. "Please listen to what I say next as if you and your loved ones were there". Matsui said these nations are "explicitly expressing self-centered nationalism" while modernizing their nuclear weapons.

Matsui also expressed hope for the easing of tensions on the Korean Peninsula to proceed through "peaceable dialogue", as the US and North Korea reached an agreement to denuclearize the peninsula in their summit in June. He urged world leaders to negotiate in good faith to eliminate atomic arsenals.

His call however highlighted Japan's contradictory relationship with nuclear weapons.

But reports suggest Tokyo is considering a summit soon between Kim and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with local media floating a possible meeting on the sidelines of an worldwide forum in Russia's Vladivostok next month. In order to gain cooperation from both sides, it is important for everyone to understand "the reality of the tragedy of nuclear attacks, " he said, and reiterated Japan's pledge to maintain it pacifist and non-nuclear principles.

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in his message the legacy of Hiroshima is one of "resilience" and sought continued moral support from hibakusha survivors. By investigating old photographs and accessing first-hand accounts of the bombing, the students were able to faithfully recreate Hiroshima in 1945.
