Strong quake again hits Indonesia's Lombok island

Strong quake again hits Indonesia's Lombok island

It's the third big quake to hit Lombok in little over a week.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the latest quake at 5.9, with a depth of 10 km (6 miles). It brought down some buildings.

Cleanup and rescue efforts are still continuing on the island, following the previous quakes.

Some villages had "completely collapsed", said a Red Cross official in Lombok, Christopher Rassi.

The official death toll from Sunday's quake stands at 131 for Sunday's quake, although some Indonesian officials put the number at 347.

Indonesian authorities are appealing for food, clean water and medical help for the more than 156,000 people forced from their homes and 1,477 severely injured and in need of medical care.

The death toll from the Lombok natural disaster has risen dramatically to 347, the government-run news agency Antara has said.

Reuters witnesses reporting on the aftermath of last Sunday's quake in the north of the island said people ran out onto roads in panic and some buildings collapsed. No tsunami warning has been issued.

The national disaster agency said all those numbers were likely to increase, as more information comes in and more victims were found.

It was the strongest of some 355 aftershocks that have rattled the island since Sunday.

. Search and rescue teams have been working to access those in the worst-affected areas, close to the epicentre in northern Lombok.

A field hospital has also been established near an evacuation centre catering to more than 500 people in the village of Tanjung.

The Indonesian Red Cross said it's focusing its relief efforts on an estimated 20,000 people in remote areas in the island's north where aid still has not reached.

The latest quake was felt strongly on the island and followed a 7.0 magnitude quake on Sunday that killed at least 131 people. There are growing concerns that the important tourism industry will be badly hit at what should be a busy time.

Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless on the island.
