US senator seeks dialogue with Russian legislators

Kosachev said Paul "has access" to Trump and top U.S. officials "and we expect that we will be able to convey through him our signals" of a desire to establish dialogue, according to the state-run RIA Novosti news service.

Paul is a key supporter of Trump's controversial interactions with Putin, heralding the leaders' Helsinki summit last month as exactly the sort of action Washington should be taking to mend ties between the two.

Senate group seeks new Russia sanctions MORE (R-Ky.) said Monday that a delegation of Russian lawmakers will visit Washington, D.C., after he extended the invitation during a visit to Moscow.

The issue of Russian election meddling remains a major issue in the U.S. Congress ahead of midterm elections, and such visits can potentially influence negotiations over U.S. sanctions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Engagement is vital to our national security and peace around the world".

Sen. Rand Paul said during a trip to Russia that American and Russian legislators need closer contact, noting that "our biggest problem right now is no dialogue".

US Senator Rand Paul will today become the latest member of Congress to travel to Russian Federation as part of President Trump's efforts to reengage with Moscow.

The information could not be immediately confirmed by us officials.

Visiting Moscow on Monday, Sen.

The delegation with Paul included Phillip Huffines, a Texas Republican who ran unsuccessfully in a primary race this spring, and Peter Goettler, president and CEO of the Cato Institute, the conservative Washington-based think tank.

Shelby's delegation said it had come with the similar goal of reviving communications with Russia, but had also delivered a warning to the Russians not to interfere in the USA mid-terms this November.

Paul argued that "those who believe in either country that we should not have diplomacy are greatly mistaken".

"It does not mean that we have no differences, it does not mean that we will not, on occasion, have discussions back and forth where we disagree".

If the Russian Federation accepts the invite, it would be their first trip to Capitol Hill in three years.
