In Gaza Flare-Up, New York Times Obscures Cause and Effect

In Gaza Flare-Up, New York Times Obscures Cause and Effect

Palestinians inspect the damaged building of Said al-Mis'hal cultural centre after it was hit bombed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on Thursday.

The Israeli military said seven people were wounded by Palestinian rockets and mortars that hit southern Israel.

Israeli aircraft struck more than 150 targets in Gaza overnight and Palestinian militants fired scores of rockets, including a long-range missile deep into Israel, escalating fighting despite talks on a truce to avert an all-out conflict.

Israel did not formally comment on the issue, but an Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, denied a cease-fire had been reached.

"Israel is being inundated with Hamas rocket fire from Gaza", the coalition said in a tweet that included a picture of the devastation and text saying "180 rockets and counting".

Nearly 200 rockets and mortar shells were fired from within Gaza by Hamas and other Palestinian movements at towns and villages in Israel, provoking a similar number of attacks by the Israeli Air Force.

Three Palestinians have been killed, including a pregnant woman and her 18-month old daughter, according to the health ministry in Gaza. According to the Jerusalem Post, more than 200 rockets and mortars were launched since August 8, leaving 28 Israelis injured.

The White House has said that easing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is one of its priorities.

While Israeli officials insisted that their large-scale attack on Gaza was in response to Hamas rocket fire, Haaretz reports that it was in fact the Israeli army that sparked the escalation by killing two Palestinians with tank fire, after they allegedly mistook a training exercise for an actual attack.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military struck a Hamas military post in Gaza after it said militants fired on Israeli troops on the border.

Before the Beersheba incident, Israeli officials said Netanyahu was due to hold the security cabinet session later in the day after consultations with security officials.

And in the same way, the IDF attacks continue throughout the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian media.

The 140-square-mile strip, under partial blockade by Israel for more than a decade, suffers from chronic unemployment and a lack of infrastructure and services.

The sun may be free, but the technology is not, and Palestinians say their ability to import solar panels has been hampered by Israeli border controls.

Israel's Iron Dome defense system intercepted more than 30 rockets, and others landed in open areas in southern Israel, said the IDF.

UN Middle East envoy Nickolay Mladenov said the United Nations had engaged with Egypt in an "unprecedented effort" to avoid serious conflict, but "the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people".

"In the past 24 hours", he stated, "the Air Force attacked over 150 substantial targets along the Strip, including weapons storage, military compounds, training compounds, a building used by Hamas for military purposes, and terror cells". Large turnout at the protests has also been driven by widespread desperation in Gaza, amid worsening conditions linked to the blockade. An Israeli soldier was killed by a Gaza sniper during this same period.

On Wednesday, the Israeli military shelled the Palestinian territory after civilians working on the Gaza border fence came under fire.
