Saudi Arabia 'threatens' Canada with 9/11 style attack

Saudi Arabia 'threatens' Canada with 9/11 style attack

Saudi Arabia's national airline Saudia announced the suspension of all direct flights to and from Toronto following Canada's comments about the kingdom's treatment of human rights activists. In response, the Saudi Arabian government took quick retaliatory action by expelling Canada's ambassador and calling their own home, suspending all new trade deals, cancelling all student exchanges between the two countries and suspending all flights to and from Toronto.

"We're always going to speak up for woman's rights and that's not going to change", she said, adding that it wasn't the first time Canada has spoken out about human rights in Saudi Arabia", she said.

While Canada's expression of concern about the arrests of human rights activists wasn't unusual from their perspective, the Saudi reaction has been extreme.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights estimates that at least 15 human rights defenders and women's rights activists critical of the Saudi government had been arrested or detained arbitrarily since 15 May.

A tweet from the Saudi Ministry of Education spokesman said that the country would end training programs, scholarship and fellowships in Canada.

Al Jubeir said the charges against women's rights activists Samar Badawi and Nassima al Sada will be made public once the case reaches the courts.

"He was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison, he received 50 lashes in 2015 and he could receive others, but he hasn't", she said.

"Canada will continue to advocate for human rights and for the courageous women and men who push for these fundamental rights around the world", she said in a statement.

"Any other attempt to interfere with our internal affairs from Canada, means that we are allowed to interfere in Canada's internal affairs", the ministry said.

"Both sides need to diplomatically resolve this together".

Saudi Arabia's market closure comes on the heels of ongoing trade disputes in other key Canadian grain markets including Italy, Peru, Vietnam, and India as well as increased protectionist sentiments within the United States.

A Saudi Arabia threat on Monday to carry out a 9/11-style attack on Canada has provoked a huge backlash. But last fall, he said, the university had 49 undergraduate and 21 graduate students registered from Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh on Sunday recalled its ambassador from Canada and gave the Canadian ambassador 24 hours to leave.

The impact on University of Northern British Columbia will be more cultural than financial if Saudi Arabia makes good on a vow to recall students attending Canadian universities, according to president Daniel Weeks.

Sources told Reuters news agency that Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will most likely turn to the UAE for assistance, after Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic and trade ties with Canada.

On Thursday, Aug. 2, Chrystia Freeland, Canada's foreign minister, sent out a tweet regarding human rights in the Middle East kingdom.

Several Arab nations in the region have expressed support for their Saudi allies in the dispute with Canada.
