Bill Schuette and Gretchen Whitmer Win Michigan Gubernatorial Primary Races

Bill Schuette and Gretchen Whitmer Win Michigan Gubernatorial Primary Races

About $23 million was spent airing broadcast TV ads, including almost $17 million on governor's races won by Democrat Gretchen Whitmer and Republican Bill Schuette.

Libertarians also had a choice for governor on the primary ticket, for the first time in Michigan's history.

Whitmer, a former legislative leader, defeated chemical-testing businessman Shri Thanedar and ex-Detroit health director Abdul El-Sayed in Tuesday's primary. State Attorney General Bill Schuette won the GOP nomination.

The state's Democratic nomination went to State Sen. In the contests for both the governor's office and the Senate, some of the state's most Trump-like conservatives will square off against two traditional Democrats - and two women - in Whitmer and the incumbent senator, Debbie Stabenow.

"We need a governor who can get things done and is ready to roll up her sleeves and get things done", she said.

Other GOP candidates are Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, state Sen.

More than 2 million votes were cast around MI yesterday. She said while the president's party typically faces rough sledding in his first midterm election, Michigan Republicans have a better record of getting out the vote than Democrats do.

In other races that will be closely watched this fall, Democrats nominated former national security official Elissa Slotkin and former state Rep. Gretchen Driskell for Republican-held House seats in southeastern MI. He pointed to his June poll of likely November voters that showed 57 percent were extremely interested in the election and extremely motivated to vote, but among Democratic women it was 67 percent.

She said even Republican-leaning women in Oakland County north of Detroit are volunteering for her campaign. Democrats have hammered the administration across the state recently for Trump's protectionist steel tariffs, which they say are raising prices on everyday goods and hurting MI workers.

In the 8th district, which is crucial to Democrats' hopes of retaking the House, voters selected an establishment favorite, Elissa Slotkin, as the nominee.

Vice President Mike Pence, who sought to unify Republicans at a post-primary rally in Grand Rapids, said the "blue wall" crumbled in MI with Trump's 2016 win - the first for a GOP presidential nominee in decades.
