Zimbabwe opposition lodges appeal against election result

Zimbabwe opposition lodges appeal against election result

Sunday's inauguration of Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been halted after a legal challenge by the opposition against the election result.

There will still be a core European Union team to monitor the election petitions in the urgent, and no doubt fiercely fought, court days ahead.

Advocate Mpofu said the applicant has enough evidence including alleged statistical misrepresentations by the elections administration body, ZEC and other factors that included an uneven playing field.

Judges have 14 days to rule on the case, delaying the inauguration of Mnangagwa which was scheduled for Sunday. We have a good case and cause!

The electoral commission declared the Zanu-PF's Emmerson Mnangagwa had 50.8% of votes against the MDC Alliance's Nelson Chamisa's 44.3%.

Mnangagwa, who is seeking to reverse Zimbabwe's economic isolation and attract desperately-needed foreign investment, had vowed the elections would be free and fair, and would turn a page on Mugabe's repressive 37-year rule.

She said the United States Government is deeply concerned that Zambia chose to hand over Mr Biti to the Zimbabwean authorities, and in the face of a reported Zambian court order blocking his expulsion from Zambia.

"We are seeking a declaration to the effect that the presidential election was not properly conducted".

The polls' aftermath has been marred by allegations of a crackdown on opposition members, including beatings and arrests.

Mr Biti is the first senior opposition politician to be detained since Mr Mnangagwa took over from Mr Mugabe.

Mnangagwa wrote on Twitter that Biti was released after he intervened personally in the case.

Zambia risks losing aid from the USA government following the forced deportation of Zimbabwean opposition politician Tendai Biti. We call on Zimbabwe's leaders to guarantee Mr. Biti's physical safety and ensure his constitutional and human rights are respected, consistent with the rule of law and Zimbabwe's global obligations and commitments.
