Australian newspaper claims Serena Williams cartoon 'not about race'

Australian newspaper claims Serena Williams cartoon 'not about race'

Women's Tennis Association, the governing body for women's tennis, backed Serena Williams over her claims of sexism by umpire Carlos Ramos during the U.S. Open Finals on Saturday.

Williams was facing Japanese global Naomi Osaka in the final of the US Open on Saturday, as the American was chasing a record-breaking 24th Grand Slam title.

After taking out the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, Osaka and Williams appeared together for the trophy ceremony, during which audible boos erupted from the crowd. "Because I am a woman you are going to take this away from me?"

Ramos was unable to defend himself over the weekend as the rules prevent umpires from commenting on the matches they oversee.

The cartoon was a response to Williams' behaviour Saturday, when she was slapped with a hat trick of code violations late in the match for receiving coaching, smashing her racket, and arguing with the chair umpire. "She's passionate. She was speaking out and I think for Ramos, he was a little defensive at that point, and was fed up as opposed to saying, 'Okay, let's get back to business, '" Adams said. "I think that's probably the context of the conversation".

"There are other examples of sexism in sport whether it comes down to prize money, the way male players are treated in comparison to women", she said.

However, the world number one Williams received three code violations, therefore, meaning she was docked a game. Others, including Billie Jean King and Chris Evert, criticized Ramos for his handling of the situation. Her third violation, for calling the umpire Carlos Ramos a "thief," cost her a game. "At the end of the day, I hope everybody understands and celebrates Naomi because she's the US Open champion and that's pretty dope", Curry added. While the USTA issued a statement saying that all players could change their shirts at their chair, former ATP VP Richard Ings, who did not name a source, said that umpires had been specifically told before the tournament began that female players could not change attire on the court.

In response to criticism from United States media and on social media channels, Herald Sun editor Damon Johnston said, "A champion tennis player had a mega tantrum on the world stage, and Mark's cartoon depicted that".

Ramos, who is from Portugal, spoke briefly to Portuguese newspaper Tribuna Expresso this week.

"Don't worry about me, I'll be fine".

Meanwhile, tennis umpires are also considering forming a union as they feel no one is standing up for them.
