Jeff Fager Was Fired After Sending Warning Text to CBS News Reporter

After CBS fired "60 Minutes" producer Jeff Fager on Wednesday, Fager claimed that he'd been ousted for sending a "harsh" text to a CBS reporter who was covering the allegations of sexual misconduct made against him.

Fager is leaving because he "violated company policy, and it is our commitment to uphold these policies at every level", CBS News President David Rhodes said in a statement.

Fager's departure comes three days after it was announced that CBS Chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves was leaving the company amid sexual misconduct allegations.

Amid the news, Fager issued a statement to Fox News that said the move "had nothing to do with the false allegations printed in The New Yorker".

"60 Minutes" will enter its 51st season under the leadership of executive editor Bill Owens while the search for a new executive producer begins. "My language was harsh and, despite the fact that all journalists receive harsh demands for fairness all the time, CBS did not like it".

The text message to Duncan was a warning over the network's coverage of the sexual harassment accusations against him. However, Moonves wasn't the only CBS honcho named and the spotlight was placed on Fager after Moonves' exit.

In Rhodes' memo to staffers on Wednesday, he said, "This action today is not directly related to the allegations surfaced in press reports, which continue to be investigated independently". She said Fager groped her at a work party.

"I am that reporter".

Rhodes said Fager violated company policy but did not specify the policy.

Steve Kroft, a veteran correspondent on "60 Minutes", told CNN, "Over the years Jeff Fager has done a remarkable job managing '60 Minutes, ' but the text message to Jericka Duncan was threatening and inappropriate".

He added: 'One such note should not result in termination after 36 years, but it did'. He also introduced "CBS This Morning" in January 2012.

"Despite Charlie's important journalistic contribution to our news division, there is absolutely nothing more important, in this or any organization, than ensuring a safe, professional workplace - a supportive environment where people feel they can do their best work", Rhodes said in a memo previous year.

A representative for Fager said he had no further comment on Wednesday night. "60 Minutes" is, as Rhodes notes in his memo, "the most significant news broadcast on television", having debuted in 1968 and served as the investigative home for such television inquisitors as Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, Ed Bradley and Lesley Stahl.
