Nixon hopes for big upset in primary battle with Cuomo

Nixon hopes for big upset in primary battle with Cuomo

"It's an exciting day that we've worked so hard for and we're seeing so much excitement - so much excitement, so much enthusiasm, so much momentum - in New York City, across the state", Nixon told reporters as she cast her vote.

The email included multiple excerpts of news reports from 2010, detailing how Nixon was part of a group of approximately 200 American celebrities, including many Jews, who signed a letter advocating a boycott by Israeli actors, directors and playwrights of a new theater in Ariel, one of the largest Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

"The way I ran this campaign, it's been on the issues, it's been positive", Cuomo said at a news conference Sunday.

Celebrities in NY are voicing support for both Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and his challenger from the left, Cynthia Nixon, as the Empire State heads to the polls for its primary vote.

Cuomo has said that he had no knowledge of the mailer and said through a spokeswoman that the language was "inappropriate".

The planned opening of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo bridge to replace the old Tappan Zee Bridge between Westchester and Rockland counties was supposed to bolster Cuomo's image as a can-do governor, but a last-minute delay changed that narrative. She also paints Cuomo as a moderate Democrat, if not one that leans toward Republican, Pehme said.

Surveys show Cuomo is far ahead, but Nixon says the polls shouldn't be trusted.

A mailer from the state Democratic Party that suggested that Nixon is anti-Semitic also backfired for Cuomo.

"He is going hard, but I think what that shows is that he is actually scared because he understands that we've got a real hunger for progressive change in NY state and he doesn't have a record to run on", Ms. Nixon said Wednesday on the "Breakfast Club" radio show.

But Nixon pointed to a slew of recent upsets ー Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Andrew Gillum, and Ayanna Pressley ー that have fueled her optimism for Thursday's primary. They might not think she can win, but a vote for her might convince be a warning to Cuomo to clean up his act.

Polls close at 9 p.m. but our coverage starts at 7 p.m. with "Inside City Hall". Bernie Sanders and the editorial board of the New York Times, which said she is well prepared to serve as a firewall against the Trump administration and keep tabs on "a state government in which ethics can seem a mere inconvenience". She later paired up with attorney general hopeful Zephyr Teachout in Manhattan.

Earlier this campaign season, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley both upset long-serving Democratic incumbent congressmen in nominating races in NY and MA, promising more vigorous liberal policies and highlighting their opposition to Republican President Donald Trump.
