Amazon’s Bezos says Trump should be ‘glad’ of media scrutiny

Amazon’s Bezos says Trump should be ‘glad’ of media scrutiny

Bezos, now the world's richest person, asked Twitter followers a year ago for ideas about how he should shape his "philanthropy strategy".

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is to launch a $2bn (£1.53bn) fund to help homeless families and launch pre-schools in poor communities.

Citing the Amazon mantra of customer obsession, Bezos said in a tweet "the child will be the customer".

Bezos' announcement comes on the heels of a number of high-profile philanthropic efforts by the country's tech billionaires.

Bezos and his wife MacKenzie Bezos sit on the board of the Bezos Family Foundation, run by his parents. "It was a Day 1 outlook that made me reach out to ask for suggestions on approaches to philanthropy past year".

Jeff Bezos, Amazon chief and the world's richest person, attended a board meeting in pyjamas on Wednesday and shared the new look on Instagram. "It was only a matter of time before Bezos would join this new era of big philanthropy".

"If you're the president of the United States, you don't take that job thinking you're not going to be scrutinized", Bezos said, adding that he'd had "a couple of conversations" with Donald Trump, though he declined to elaborate.

As with most investment decisions by the Amazon founder, this one was likely grounded in data and science.

Amazon CEO and world's richest man Jeff Bezos has invoked Twitter wrath for seemingly an all-around commendable cause - setting up a charity fund to fight homelessness and create a preschool network for the underprivileged.

Gates did not fully throw himself into philanthropy until he stepped down as CEO of Microsoft in 2000.

"I don't know how much I'm going to give away", he told economic club president David Rubenstein.

While the online retail giant's presence made Seattle the fastest-growing big city in the USA, it also has taken a toll on its residents, driving up rent prices, clogging traffic and overwhelming public transportation.

"We're hoping that local, state and federal governments see this as a call to invest more in preschool and childcare", he said.

While Bezos was thinking about where best to put his own money, Amazon stepped up its corporate giving, focused on growing inequality in its hometown of Seattle.

Launched in 1994 as an online bookseller, Amazon has become a retail powerhouse operating globally, and has expanded into streaming video, music, cloud computing and other segments, and a year ago acquired the Whole Foods grocery chain. It previously helped the nonprofit temporarily house 200 homeless people.
