British UN Envoy Pierce Says UK 'Strongly' Agrees With Erdogan on Idlib

British UN Envoy Pierce Says UK 'Strongly' Agrees With Erdogan on Idlib

But Russia and Iran rejected Turkey's call for a cease-fire at the summit in Tehran, she said, "and the Assad regime continued its brutal attacks".

According to the Russian defence ministry, Middle Eastern and United States television networks have already sent operatives into northern Syria to stage and film a fake chemical attack ahead of an expected Russian and Syrian government operation in Idlib, billed as the last major battle of the civil war.

Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Erdogan said the West had an "obligation to stop the next bloodshed" but that regime allies Moscow and Tehran were "likewise responsible for stopping this humanitarian disaster". At a council meeting also on Friday, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia defended the military plans for Idlib, saying armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda were "a legitimate target for liquidation".

Idlib is the insurgents' only remaining major stronghold and a government offensive could be the war's last decisive battle. Erdogan urged the global community to take action or face "security risks for Turkey, the rest of Europe and beyond".

"We're deeply concerned about this recent escalation of violence, which has resulted in the displacement of over 30,000 in the area".

Syrian FM said the goal of this operation is to wipe out the jihadist groups in Idlib and the worldwide actors must recognise that effort as Syria's independence right.

Russian Federation hopes for a peaceful resolution of the situation in Syria's rebel-held province of Idlib but believes it is up to Turkey to separate Islamist militants from the moderate opposition, Russia's Syria envoy said on Tuesday. "That's something we're monitoring very closely", OCHA spokesman David Swanson said.

A full-scale military offensive on Idlib risks creating the worst humanitarian tragedy of the 21st century, United Nations aid agencies have said, amid concerns that a severe funding shortfall threatens the most vulnerable victims of the conflict. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict and millions more displaced, according to the UN.

Many made a dash for Syria's northern border with Turkey, with just under half seeking refuge in displacement camps and others living with local families or renting apartments.

"In this sense, a military operation in Idlib would only play into the hands of terrorists", he said.

The US has conducted two recent high-profile airstrikes in Syria in response to alleged chemical weapons attacks, once in April 2017 and again in April of this year.
