Tennis umpires considering boycotting Serena Williams matches

Tennis umpires considering boycotting Serena Williams matches

One suggestion being floated is to refuse any match assignments involving Williams until she apologizes for vilifying Ramos.

Women's governing body the WTA supported Williams and chief executive Steve Simon said the umpire showed her a different level of tolerance over her outbursts than if she had been a man. On the contrary, he praised Williams for showing "grace and class" in a situation in which Naomi Osaka, the victor in two sets, was overshadowed.

Serena Williams talks with chair umpire Carlos Ramos during a match against Naomi Osaka, of Japan, in the women's final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, in NY.

Williams also pointed to an incident earlier in the tournament when French player Alize Cornet was charged with a code violation for switching her top around, which was back-to-front, on the court, while in the men's draw Novak Djokovic was photographed smiling with his shirt off in the very same tournament. "I don't cheat to win - I'd rather lose", she said.

The 36-year-old had already had a point penalty for smashing her racquet and a code violation for coaching when she was penalised further for calling Ramos a "thief" and a "liar" in NY. That triggered a third violation, which resulted in a game penalty that gave Osaka a 5-3 lead.

At the press conference after the match, Williams said that the umpire's sanctions were an act of sexism, according to CNN. "I'm here fighting for women's rights and for women's equality and for all kinds of stuff". For me to say 'thief, ' and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark.

"I've never been called for coaching, but the racket abuse, the verbal abuse", Johnson added. "But I'm going to continue to fight for women and to fight for us to have equal [treatment]".

An anonymous official told The Times that there was a growing consensus that umpires were not supported by the USTA on several occasions, and that Ramos was thrown to the wolves for simply doing his job.

Williams was fined $17,000 for the rules violations, and the International Tennis Federation backed Ramos, saying his "decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules".

The Japanese player won $3.8million, and told Ellen while she did not own a vehicle, she would prefer to spend her prize money on her parents. "Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis", it said.
