FLORENCE: Multiple fatalities linked to hurricane

FLORENCE: Multiple fatalities linked to hurricane

The Navy says nearly 30 Virginia-based ships and 128 aircraft sent away from their bases in the Hampton Roads-area because of now-Tropical Storm Florence have been given the go-ahead to return.

Response teams had already "brought in busloads" of rescued people from areas including Fairfield Harbor, New Bern, Adams Creek and Township 7, she said.

A Navy statement says the decision comes after inspections of the region's port and airfield.

Despite weakening to a Category 1 storm, the Federal Emergency Management Agency gives this ominous warning: "Don't focus on the category of the storm".

McMaster had ordered residents in most of the state's coastal counties to evacuate ahead of Florence's arrival.

By Saturday morning the winds weakened to 50mph but the storm's slow speed means that communities in North Carolina are receiving a prolonged battering by torrential rain.

Evacuation zones in Horry and Georgetown counties remain under the order.

As Tropical Storm Florence continues its slow assault on the North Carolina coast, some county sheriffs are grappling with another problem amid the mass flooding: looters.

SC recorded its first death from the storm, with officials saying a 61-year-old woman was killed when her vehicle hit a tree that had fallen across a highway.

New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has advised that there are now 96 New Zealanders officially registered with SafeTravel as being in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

"We have 4,200 damaged homes", he added, urging residents to not wade out into the streets because of the dangers posed by downed power lines. Areas from Wilmington through Fayetteville to Charlotte will experience 500-year to 1,000-year flood events, he said. That is roughly double the rainfall from Hurricane Matthew in 2016, he said.

Florence plowed into the Carolinas and lumbered slowly inland on Friday, knocking down trees, gorging rivers, dumping sheets of rain and leaving five people dead before it was downgraded to a tropical storm still capable of wreaking havoc.

"Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-priced loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programmes to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster", FEMA said in a statement.

The declaration also provides assistance to local governments for cleanup efforts following the storm, including building repairs.

Rainfall has been heavy and consistent in the areas of the storm, with Florence expected to cascade up to 40 inches of rain across southern and central portions of North Carolina into far northeastern SC. The National Hurricane Centre in Miami says the core of Florence was located at 11pm Friday about 20 kilometres west-northwest of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a resort area known for its white sands and multitude of golf courses. Maximum sustained winds remained at 50 miles per hour (80 kph). And there could be 10 inches (25 cm) in south-western Virginia. Storm totals could reach between 30 and 40 inches in some areas. "In addition to the flash flood and flooding threat, landslides are also possible in the higher terrain of the southern and central Appalachians across western North Carolina in southwest Virginia".

It's the first death believed to have been caused by Florence in SC. As her son fed the goats in a hotel parking lot, she said she might not be able to return home until the middle of next week.

North Carolina Army National Guard soldiers were sent to a home along the 100 block of El Nora Lane in Otway, North Carolina, on Friday in reference to two deaths there. Hurricane force winds were being felt in an 80-mile radius from the center of the storm.

"Doppler radar was showing a band of heavy rain developing off the North and South Carolina Coasts". More than 360 people have been carried to safety since Thursday night amid rising waters.

It has already claimed five victims, with a mother and her baby crushed by a tree in North Carolina.

Kevin Knox carries gas and a generator after being rescued from his flooded neighborhood from the effects of Florence, now a tropical storm, in New Bern, North Carolina, on September 15, 2018.
