Celtics guard Jabari Bird to be arraigned on domestic violence charge

Celtics guard Jabari Bird to be arraigned on domestic violence charge

Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird was arrested last Friday after allegedly assaulting, strangling and kidnapping an unidentified person in a domestic incident. After that, they said, he "began strangling her with two hands, approximately a dozen times".

"I'm taking some time away from the team as I deal with my legal and medical issues", Bird said in the statement.

Before the arraignment, Bird had been in custody in a hospital, where he received a psychological evaluation.

The prosecution asked Bird to be held on $100,000 bail, but the judge decided on $50,000 cash.

Prosecutors said in court yesterday that the woman reported that Bird, 24, threw her against a wall during an argument at his home.

The ordeal, sparked by what the woman called "trust issues", went on for several hours, she said, until Bird experienced "seizure-like" symptoms and fell.

At the arraignment, Bird was charged with assault and battery with a risky weapon, assault and battery of a family or household member, kidnapping and strangulation, following his arrest over the weekend.

Bird was ordered to not have any contact with the alleged victim or any witnesses, and he must stay away from her college.

Bird is being represented by Brian T. Kelly, a former federal prosecutor who spent years purusing and then successfully prosecuting James "Whitey" Bulger; and Robert Fisher, who prosecuted Massachusetts Probation Department officials in a case that was overturned on appeal, the Globe has learned. "I apologize to my family, the Celtics organization, my teammates, the fans and the National Basketball Association for the unnecessary distraction that I have caused". I do not condone violence against women.

It is unclear whether or not Bird will remain in custody at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, where he has been since apprehended, make bail, or be moved to a detention facility.

The Celtics released a statement after the arraignment, saying the "organization deplores domestic violence of any kind" and offering no further comment.

The Celtics said in their statement that, per the NBA's policy on domestic violence, "matters of this kind" are handled by the league.

Bird, a second-round draft choice of the Celtics in 2017 out of California, signed a two-year contract with the team this summer after splitting his rookie season between Boston and the Maine Red Claws of the G-League.
