Russia's largest-ever war games and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation concerns

Russia's largest-ever war games and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation concerns

Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to strengthen his nation's military during remarks made following Russia's largest-ever war games exercises with neighboring China.

In the far East of Russian Federation has completed the main phase of the military exercises "Vostok-2018".

Given the declining and increasingly acrimonious state of relations since Russia's annexation of Crimea, Putin "wishes to be as best prepared as possible to prevail in open warfare", Giles said.

Putin said the war games demonstrate the Russian army is capable of countering military threats, without naming the aggressors.

"Russia is a peace-loving state, we do not have and can not have any aggressive plans, Our foreign policy is aimed at (development of) the constructive cooperation with all the countries interested in that", Putin said while attending the exercises.

"Today here, at the Tsugol range in the Zabaikalsky Territory, the most active stage of the (Vostok-2018) drills came to an end".

The participation of the People's Liberation Army surprised many experts.

Russian Federation began its biggest war games since the fall of the Soviet Union on Tuesday close to its border with China, mobilising 300,000 troops in a show of force that will include joint exercises with the Chinese army.

"Therefore, we will continue to strengthen our armed forces, equip them with latest weapons and technologies, to develop worldwide military cooperation", Putin said.

"Our foreign policy is aimed at constructive cooperation with all countries that are interested in it", he added.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov, Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe and Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff Department of China's Central Military Commission Shao Yuanming, as well as Hansalem Lhagvasuren, a brigade commander of the Armed Forces of Mongolia, as well as 87 observers from 59 countries, attended the drills, according to the Kremlin.
